Episode 102: First Day

The Gilmore Girls Soundtrack theme music was provided by Scott Holmes. A big, big thanks to Scott for sharing his great talent.

Gilmore Girls: Complete Soundtrack, including (most of) the songs from this episode:

Songs that are in this podcast (or appear in Season 1, Episode 2 of Gilmore Girls):

Today’s Guest: Sydnie Barnette

Sydnie is fond of cute dogs, pizza, Lush’s Fresh Face Masks (especially Cupcake), doodling and writing goofy songs.  She’s part of the long-running sister duo ShiSho and more recently began drumming for Heavenly Creatures. Sydnie is new to Gilmore Girls (she’s currently on Season 1, Episode 16) but she’s already quite fond of Lane Kim.

Spinning in Stars Hollow

This week, I’ve added 4 songs to the season 1 Spinning In Stars Hollow playlist:

Please, if you like what you hear, support these artists and buy their music.

What do you think, what Lorelai says to the Chilton father (who’s hitting on her), that he isn’t on the PTA? Thats probably a reference to Jeannie C. Riley ‘Harper Valley P.T.A.’ right? Btw, looking forward to listening to more of your podcasts 🙂

Whoa! That’s a great catch! I hope to be doing better at catching all the references as my episodes go by, but I’m sure there will be one or two from time to time. Thanks for listening and for giving feedback!

Hey Melissa, I think its impossible to catch everything even with a hundred people, but thats why I like your podcasts, you definitely found some stuff I didn’t catch. Thats the strength of the show. I’m not sure, but I think the show aired here (Holland) in 1999. I remember watching it with my friend when I was a bit younger than Rory was at the beginning. We absolutely loved it. Of course being that age I missed a lot of references, not only about music, but also concerning a lot of the pop / political ones. I’ve actually never stopped watching it, I have no idea how many times I’ve seen all of it but I still discover more and more references. Many are US-jokes. Only when I saw Argo I understood Rory in the episode the day before she’s going to college: ‘she’s taking me hostage, this is Iran ’79 and you are Jimmy Carter’. Thats why I’m sure I will still watch GG when I’m 50 / 80 because there’s so much to discover and learn!

There is one musical reference that I can’t verify anywhere I was hoping you could help me! Its from 5.18 – To Live and Let Diorama. Lane thinks that Zac is cheating on here but in the end discovers that he’s actually playing the banjo. My name is Jolene, so as a kid I had a Dolly Parton tape (see the obvious reference 😉 ). On it was Apple Jack, which was always one of my favourites, I didn’t catch it the first time but once Lane finds out about him playing the banjo she says, in a really weird way; “I like the banjo too-oo’. OH! And now I only just realised the episode is about Old man Twickum dying! Which also happens in the song! Now I absolutely think its a reference about the Dolly Parton song. Haha! Still I would like your opinion about it, what do you think?

On a different note, what is it you do beside the GG podcasts, I can imagine it takes so much time? Maybe you reveal this in later episodes (I’ve ‘only’ listened to the first 5 yesterday) but I’m really curious!

Hi Jolene! Thanks for all the input. I actually answered your question on this week’s episode, 119: Sweet Sixteen! When you get to it, I hope you enjoy. I’m so glad you found the show and are enjoying it! Copper boom!
